Asphalt spills from ship into Mystic River during offloading

The following is the text of a press release issued by the U.S. Coast Guard:

(BOSTON) — The Coast Guard is monitoring the cleanup of approximately 11,000 gallons of asphalt spilled in the Mystic River, in Everett, Massachusetts, at approximately 3:30 p.m., Thursday.

During an offload of asphalt from the 439-foot Palanca Singapore at the Exxon terminal in Everett, a hose failure resulted in approximately 11,000 gallons of asphalt entering the water.

Exxon has contracted Clean Harbors and TMC Environmental to recover the asphalt. Coast Guard investigators are monitoring the cleanup efforts.

The liquid asphalt has solidified on the surface of the water. The asphalt is contained around the ship and there have been no known environmental impacts.
