(VINEYARD HAVEN, Mass.) — A Rhode Island–based fast ferry lost power after departing Martha's Vineyard on Sunday, then was towed to prevent it from grounding on a beach, the MV Times reported.
About 75 passengers were on board M/V Ava Pearl en route to Quonset, R.I., when the incident occurred at about 11 a.m. “She lost both engines and just stopped, that’s all I know,” Ava Pearl’s captain, Tony Bessinger, told the Times.
A Sea Tow rescue boat and a U.S. Coast Guard patrol boat responded after the ferry anchored near East Chop in heavy seas. Responders were able to pull the vessel away from the beach and the tugboat Sirius later towed it to Vineyard Haven.
