Researchers test 'whale tail' to make ships more fuel efficient

(TRONDHEIM, Norway) — Researchers from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology are testing a "whale tail" on ships to reduce fuel consumption using wave energy, Ship.Technology.com reported. The foils are attached to the underside of the vessel to help speed forward navigation. The foils have been shown to reduce resistance between 9 percent and 17 percent in seas under 3 meters.
