(DULUTH, Minn.) — Minnesota is giving Great Lakes ship owners an extra two years to install ballast water treatment equipment, acknowledging that the technology doesn't exist yet for freshwater freighters to meet the state's guidelines, the Duluth News Tribune reported. In 2008, Minnesota became one of the first states to issue ballast water regulations and the only state to target lakers as well as saltwater vessels. The rules are part of an effort to reduce invasive species that hitchhike in ballast water.
