EPA files complaint against former SS Independence

(SAN FRANCISCO) — The cruise liner formerly known as the SS Independence cannot be exported to a shipbreaking yard, according to a complaint filed by the Environmental Protection Agency, the Environmental News Service reported. The EPA said the MV Oceanic contains PCBs and other pollutants which are unlawful to export. Formerly owned by Norwegian Cruise Lines, the Oceanic is being towed to Singapore, and current owner Global Shipping and Global Marketing Systems Inc. intends to scrap the vessel, the EPA said in court papers.
