Funding wait may slow Monongahela River lock work (SLIDESHOW)

(CHARLEROI, Pa.) -- An Army Corps of Engineers project to build larger lock chambers on the Monongahela River is being slowed by the availability of federal funding, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review newspaper reported. Lock and Dam 4 at Charleroi is the narrowest on the river, and vessels sometimes need to break down their tows and double-lock to get through. The project will install a modern 84-foot-wide chamber to replace the 56-foot-wide structure that is 70 years old.
