Canadian destroyer punctured after colliding with tug, navy report says

(HALIFAX, Nova Scotia) — The Canadian destroyer HMCS Athabaskan sustained six punctures in its hull in December 2012 after colliding with a tugboat that was towing it, according to a report in the Montreal Gazette by The Canadian Press. Investigators say Ocean Delta, one of two tugboats involved in the operation, suddenly lost power in the Gulf of St. Lawrence when an air leak caused the clutch to disengage. HMCS Athabaskan struck Ocean Delta, which then spun around and hit the navy ship. The tug's fenders "burst as a result of the force exerted on them during the collision," the report says.
