Free safety video advises mariners on avoiding undersea pipelines

A new instruction video is now available with advice for mariners on how to avoid undersea pipelines.

Coastal and Marine Operators (CAMO) and GulfSafe, two principal organizations dedicated to preventing collisions with pipelines (see Professional Mariner #146, May 2011), are now distributing the educational DVD free of charge.

The video is available to mariners, pipeline operators and other concerned individuals and companies.

The intent of the educational materials is to mitigate risk to mariners and infrastructure in the Gulf of Mexico. The 14-minute professionally produced DVD explains the hazards posed by submerged pipelines. It offers information on how to prevent an incident, understand the signs of a pipeline leak and how to respond to a suspected leak.

The video covers the specifics of the reporting process before embarking on subsurface work and offers advice on crew emergency preparedness.

Included with the DVD is additional information on marine pipeline damage prevention and awareness and a handy laminated hazard-avoidance checklist of what to do before you mobilize your vessel operation and during mobilization and mooring. There is a checklist for spotting a leak and an action plan if you suspect a leak.

The DVD and accompanying materials are available free of charge by contacting info@camogroup.org.

Individuals and companies are also free to duplicate the DVD and distribute it as needed.
