Wisconsin officials back shoreside ballast treatment

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is supporting a plan to treat ships’ ballast water on the shore. The Daily Telegram newspaper of Superior, Wisc., published an editorial questioning details of the feasibility study, the plan’s cost and whether it should be implemented throughout the Great Lakes. The proposal would establish a system for transferring ballast water to a dockside barge for treatment to prevent the spread of invasive species. The state-funded Port of Milwaukee study said the idea should be tested in a pilot program first.
