Towing company draws on chief’s background as a naval architect

Jantran Inc. has taken delivery of Lucy Janoush, a twin-screw 4,000-hp towboat designed by the towing company’s president.

The boat was built by Nichols Boat Co. in Greenville, Miss.

Lucy Janoush was designed by Joe W. Janoush, Jantran’s president. For many years Janoush was a naval architect at Mississippi Marine Corp. in Greenville, Miss.  In 1978 Janoush stepped out on his own with his brother Brad and some other investors to form Janoush Marine Inc., becoming one of the first tenants to operate from the slack water Port of Rosedale in Bolivar County, Miss. In 1981 they formed Janoush Towing Inc. to provide barge towing along the nearby McClellan-Kerr (Arkansas River) Waterway. By 1983 they were recognized as the major towing company along the river between Tulsa, Okla., (Port of Catoosa) and the Mississippi River.

Lucy Janoush measures 114 by 35 by 11 feet and is named in honor of the wife of Jantran Vice President J. Paul Janoush.

The twin-screw vessel is powered by a pair of Caterpillar 3516B diesels, turning 96-by-92-inch, four-blade stainless steel Sound propellers on 9.25-inch shafts in Kort nozzles through Reintjes (7.087:1) reduction gears. Auxiliary power comes from two John Deere 99-kW generators.

The electronics include 21-inch radars, depth sounder, AIS and GPS.

The hull is protected against damage with custom fenders from Schuyler and the work deck is equipped with four Patterson 40-ton electric deck winches and a Schoellhorn-Albrecht electric capstan. Built within the hull are reservoirs for 52,000 gallons of fuel, 9,200 gallons of potable water, and 1,200 gallons each of engine lube oil and gear oil.

The twin steering rudders are constructed with 10-inch rudder stocks and the four flanking rudders have 9-inch stocks, all controlled by a steering system from Custom Hydraulic Components Inc., of Gretna, La. Onboard fire suppression includes two main deck firefighting stations with 50 feet of 150-pound hose on reels. They are augmented with portable fire extinguishers. The vessel is also outfitted with a fire alarm system with a central panel, sensors, warning horns and lights.

Comfortable quarters are provided for up to 10 people with private staterooms for the captain and pilot. The pilot and captain’s rooms are forward on the second deck and they share a bath with double sinks, a single shower and single head. The captain’s stateroom features a full-size bed and the pilot’s room has a twin-size bed.

The third deck consists of the electronics room forward with exterior access only. Aft of the electronics room is another stateroom with double bunks and a private bath.

Located forward on the first deck is a deck locker with exterior access only.

The galley is located along the port side forward. It allows access to a half bath and the laundry room, both in line with the deck locker across the width of the cabin. Galley equipment includes an electric range, dishwasher, two commercial-grade refrigerators and two commercial-grade freezers. The laundry room is equipped with a washer and dryer. The pilothouse has a small refrigerator installed to augment the small stainless steel sink and coffee maker.

Across from the galley on the starboard side is a dining area with a 32-inch flat screen TV mounted on the wall.

Just aft of the dining area is the lounge with comfortable seating and a wall-mounted 40-inch flat screen TV.

An engineer’s office is located on the main deck in the aft section of the upper engine room, next to the generators.

The pilothouse offers commanding views, thanks to its 33.75-foot height of eye at a typical 9-foot draft. It is equipped with a full array of electronic communications and navigation equipment. The package includes three Quantum VHF radios from Standard Horizon along with two 21-inch color radars, a digital depth sounder, AIS and GPS units and a loud hailer-intercom and a weather station with wind speed and direction indicator, all from Furuno.

Also within easy eyesight is a DeHart rate of swing indicator.

The electronic chart system is from Rose Point.
