Dock worker killed in fall from containership at Oakland

(OAKLAND, Calif.) — A Port of Oakland dock worker died after being knocked off the deck of a cargo ship by a loose container, the Oakland Tribune newspaper reported. Fellow longshoreman say the man struggled in the water for a half-hour while his colleagues tried to find a way to retrieve him. Their union accused the terminal operator of failing to provide proper rescue ladders, but the operator said such ladders were available.
