SUBJECT: Examinations for Certified Deputy Pilot Openings in the Port of Key West, PortMiami, Port of Pensacola and Ports of Tampa Bay

If you are interested in applying for the openings in the Port of Key West, PortMiami, Port of Pensacola or Ports of Tampa Bay, please submit a completed application and a non- refundable application fee of $200 per port. The Department will not begin accepting applications until October 24, 2016. All completed applications must be returned to the Department on or before December 9, 2016, however, we encourage you to make application as soon as possible. Please note that there will be at least one opening per port. Applicants will be notified if the opening increases from one.
The March 2017 Deputy Pilot Examinations are currently scheduled as follows:

Osceola Heritage Park

TIME: 7:30 a.m.
Examination for Certified Deputy Pilot Openings in Port of Key West, PortMiami, Port of Pensacola Bay and Ports of Tampa Bay
The examination will consist of the following:
1. (a) Rules of the road, International
(b) Rules of the road, Inland
(c) Seamanship and Ship handling
(d) Federal and State Pilotage Laws and Regulations
(e) Aids to navigation
2. (a) Local Knowledge of Port
(b) Port Chart Work
Prospective applicants are advised to contact the applicable port for information concerning local conditions including but not limited to:
1. Number of pilots
2. Training program in effect
3. Present and projected volume of business
4. Compensation as a deputy and later as a state pilot
Key West/Boca Grande/Fort Myers:
a. Key West- The area from the vicinity of the Key West sea buoy at Sand Key including all the approaches and the channels leading to all docks utilized by commercial vessels. This includes all slips and berths in the Port of Key West, the turning basin, approaches to and facilities at Stock Island as well as the approach via Northwest Channel. (Chart 11441, 11445 and 11447)
b. Boca Grande- The area from the vicinity of Charlotte Harbor Entrance buoy #2 via the federal channel to the facilities at Boca Grande including the surrounding areas to the ICW. (Charts 11425 and 11426) c. Ft. Myers- The area from the vicinity of San Carlos Bay Light (26-25.1N 81-57.5W) via the dredged cut through Matanzas Pass to the turning basin located above the fixed highway bridge connecting Estero Island and San Carlos Island in the vicinity of beacon 26.

The area from the vicinity of the sea buoy to and including all docks and channels utilized by commercial vessels. The main channel is to include the turning basin located at the NW corner of Dodge Island and the ICW and facilities north of that to the Venetian Causeway.
The channel south of Lummus and Dodge Island is to include the approaches to the Miami River as far as Brickell Point and that section of the ICW between the Miami River approach and the Main Channel. (Chart 11468)
Port of Pensacola
The area from the vicinity of the Pensacola Sea buoy to and including the Pensacola Bay Bridge, Bayou Chico Entrance Channel as far as the bridge, East and West Channels, Harbor Channel, and approach and facilities at Naval Base. (Chart 11383)
Ports of Tampa Bay
The approach into Tampa Bay from the vicinity of the sea buoy, as well as by Southwest Channel, to the intersection of E and F Cuts, including buoy 1F as well as the south range lights of F Cut. In addition, the following port approaches/areas will be included:
a. Port Manatee b. South approach to Bayboro (St. Petersburg) to and including junction light "S".
From the intersection of E and F Cuts, including buoy 1F, to:
a. the intersection of Hillsborough Cut C with the Port Sutton Channel and Cut D but including the upper range lights for Cut C. it will not be necessary to include any of the aids located on the channel into Big Bend, the Alafia, Port Sutton, or into Cut D.
b. the approaches to and the facilities at Rattlesnake located south of the Gandy Bridge including Port Tampa, Weedon Island, and the Bayboro (St. Petersburg) via the northern approach.
Approaches to various facilities:
a. All channels in the Port of Tampa, East Bay and Port Sutton located above the
intersection of Hillsborough Cut C, Cut D, and the Port Sutton Channel. It will not be necessary to include any of the aids in Hillsborough Cut C.
b. From the intersection of Hillsborough Cut C and the Alafia River, to and including the facilities in the Alafia River at East Tampa as well as the Alafia Range. It will not be necessary to include any of the aids in Hillsborough Cut C.
c. From the intersection of Hillsborough Cut A, Cut C and Big Bend Channel, to and including the facilities at Big Bend and the Big Bend Range. It will not be necessary to include any of the aids in Hillsborough Cut C or Cut A.
Candidates will be required to draw either section 1 or section 2 and one additional port area, either a, b, or c. (Charts 11415, 11416)
