Calif. science vessel strikes uncharted rocks in Mexico

(LA PAZ, Mexico) — The scientific research vessel Western Flyer struck rocks near the Port of La Paz, the Herald newspaper of Monterey, Calif., reported. The accident involving the 117-foot ship has placed this year’s scheduled research projects for the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute in jeopardy. Western Flyer was giving way to a large cruise ship in the narrow channel when the oceanography vessel struck unmarked submerged granite, the newspaper reported.
