Freighter loses propulsion, grounds near Green Bay

(GREEN BAY, Wis.) — A 740-foot freighter lost propulsion and ran aground Thursday about five nautical miles north of Fox River in Green Bay, NBC 26 reported.

According to the Coast Guard, the freighter is the Canadian-flagged Algoma Conveyor, which was en route to the Fox River Terminal. The ship remained grounded near Harbor Entrance Channel Light 14 on Friday, with its stern partially blocking the channel.

The vessel is in stable condition and there are no reports of any pollution or injuries. The 18-member crew is monitoring the ship, which has a cargo of road salt, for damage.

The Coast Guard said it is working with the vessel owner, Algoma Central Corp., and a contracted salvage representative, Hudson Marine Management Services, to approve a salvage plan that minimizes impact to the environment.
