Crewmember missing from bulk carrier in Gulf

The following is text of a news release from the U.S. Coast Guard:

(NEW ORLEANS) — The Coast Guard suspended its search for one person who went missing aboard the vessel Star Aquila on Friday. 

Coast Guard crews searched over 1,049 square nautical miles for approximately 40 hours but were unable to find the missing person. 

Involved in the search were:

Coast Guard Station Dauphin Island 45-foot response boat-medium crew
Coast Guard Air Station New Orleans MH-65 Dolphin helicopter air crew
Coast Guard Aviation Training Center Mobile HC-144 Ocean Sentry air crew
Coast Guard cutter Man O War crew
Star Aquila crewmembers

(NEW ORLEANS) — The Coast Guard is searching for one person who went missing aboard the bulk carrier Star Aquila on Thursday, approximately 12 nautical miles south of Dauphin Island, Ala.

Watch standers at Coast Guard Sector Mobile received a report at 4:07 a.m. that a crewmember was missing. The 41-year-old male was last seen Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.

Crewmembers conducted a search of the vessel with negative results.

The vessel has been at anchor for eight days and will transit into Mobile on Thursday.
