BC Ferries vessel damaged in hard landing

(TSAWWASSEN, British Columbia) — A hard landing by a BC Ferries vessel Saturday resulted in damage to the ferry and vehicle passengers being stuck aboard for hours, the Times Colonist reported.

Spirit of Vancouver Island struck the dock in Tsawwassen at about 4:30 p.m. after arriving from Swartz Bay, said BC Ferries communications manager Tessa Humphries. There were no injuries but the bow end of both vehicle decks sustained damage.

Crews performed welding work to lower the ship’s ramps in order to offload passengers from both vehicle decks, Humphries said. Foot passengers were not affected.

The vessel has been pulled for service while crews investigate the extent of the damage, Humphries said. The damage to the berth was minor.
