Two barges sink after Vicksburg bridge strike

(VICKSBURG, Miss.) — The Mississippi River was closed to navigation Wednesday at Vicksburg after a 30-barge tow struck the Old Highway 80 railroad bridge, with two of the barges sinking, MyArkLaMiss.com reported.

Bridge superintendent Herman Smith said M/V Chad Pregrache, operated by Marquette Transportation of Paducah, Ky., struck the bridge just after 7 a.m. Wednesday.

U.S. Coast Guard officials say two grain barges sank, but no injuries were reported. Coast Guard officials are on site investigating.

River levels at Vicksburg are rising and are predicted to crest later this month at one of the 10 highest levels on record.
