MARINE CAPTAIN

Job Description
The Tall Ship Providence is a dockside visitor attraction based in Old Town Alexandria, Virginia. Our focus is living history – we will provide a window into life aboard Providence between 1774 and 1779 and the people who were connected to it, both aboard and ashore. Our programs will provide a link to our country’s rich maritime and naval history and the American Revolution. The Tall Ship Providence Foundation (TSPF) owns and manages Providence. The Captain is responsible for the management of the statutory compliance of the vessel. This includes meeting statutory and TSPF obligations for the safe, efficient and environmentally protective operation of the ship, ensuring compliance with mandatory Coast Guard rules and regulations, and supports operational and technical management of the ship.

Overall Responsibilities
• Be adept with the vessel’s structure and layout
• Ensure safety for all staff, passengers and guests
• Familiarize first-time crew members with the management system, safety requirements, instructions, and facilities on board the vessel
• Implement and execute safety programs, including emergency drills, in accordance with Coast Guard regulations
• Conduct drills and give instructions to make sure all crew and staff members are familiar with their duties during emergencies that necessitate abandoning ship, or the recovery of persons who have fallen overboard; conduct fire drills to make sure that each crew and staff member is familiar with his or her duties in case of a fire. Inspections & Certifications
• Manage ship maintenance & repairs, including identifying contractors when needed
• Develop internship program for Alexandria Seaport Foundation apprentices, who will provide routine maintenance working under the Captain’s leadership.
• Maintain safe conditions on the ship during repairs
• Manage inspections and maintain certifications with the Coast Guard in a timely manner
• Determine vessel compliance with all applicable stability requirements in the vessel's stability letter and Certificate of Inspection prior to departure and at other times necessary to assure the safety of the vessel

Charters & Weekly Cruises
• Hire the crew for weekly cruises and chartered events; provide training as need
• Contract additional captains, if needed, for chartered cruises
• Manage all pre-cruise preparations with staff, crew and others as needed
• Engage easily with our guests to ensure a positive experience

General Administration
• Attend meetings as needed
• Maintain logbook, records, checklist and document safety training; ensure incident reports are completed in a timely manner
• Coordinate crew uniforms

Required Qualifications Overview
• Minimum of four years of marine experience
• A clear understanding of environmental requirements
• Project experience with vessels in the water and dry dock for maintenance
• Leadership, management, problem solving and analytical skills
• Familiar with current computer programs used within the industry, if applicable
• Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written form
• Manage pre-employment and ongoing random drug and alcohol testing
• Ability to familiarize yourself with Providence’s history and our programs

Additional Required Qualifications – for the Captain’s position:
• Must possess 100-ton Master license with a satisfactory record and Sailing or Auxiliary Sailing endorsement
• Must be able to operate vessel in accordance with all Coast Guard rules and procedures and other federal and local rules and regulations
• Minimum of four years of marine experience, preferably to include two years as a captain
• Per USCG regulations, must be a US Citizen or Permanent Resident
• Ability to serve as TSPF ambassador

Immediate Supervisor: Executive Director
Salary: Commensurate with experience
Benefits: Provided for full-time employees; hours may vary
Start date: Preferably April 1 but no later than April 15
