JonRie supplies winch system for new Donjon dredge

(MANAHAWKIN, N.J.) — JonRie InterTech LLC has commissioned the Series 600 spud winch and walking spud system on board the new Donjon Marine dredge Oyster Bay.

The new 165-foot clamshell dredge is the sister to the DonJon Marine dredge Delaware Bay. Oyster Bay was built at Donjon Shipbuilding in Erie, Pa., and designed by The Shearer Group, Houston, Texas. This brings the total number of dredges to six for the 55-year-old Donjon Marine Co., Hillside, N.J. The new dredge will be fully functional in the spring of 2019.

JonRie supplied the three Series 600 spud winches, walking system, 250-hp hydraulic power unit (HPU), soft starter and controls. Each winch has a hoisting line pull of 100,000 pounds and the capacity to lift a 100-ton spud. The walking system allows the center spud to piviot to its next excavation point without the need for tug assist.

The JonRie designed and built HPU is a skid-mounted 250-hp diesel-driven unit. The HPU also includes a 30-hp backup system to be used for an emergency mode to lift the spuds in the event of a diesel failure. The 30-hp system also can be used in the float mode (tide commensation mode) to keep the wires tight on the winches if the dredge is unmanned overnight. JonRie also designed and supplied the 30-hp soft starter, controls and pilothouse console.

Oyster Bay is the fourth dredge on which JonRie had designed and supplied the winch system to DonJon Marine.
