Deck hand killed after falling in Tenn-Tom lock

(ITAWANBA COUNTY, Miss.) — A towboat deck hand was killed after falling off a barge in the Sonny Montgomery Lock on the Tennessee-Tombigbee (Tenn-Tom) Waterway, The Itawanba County Times reported.

Officials with the Itawamba County Sheriff’s Department identified the victim as a 28-year-old resident of of Arcadia, La. He died after falling off a barge owned by Marquette Transportation Co. and being crushed against the wall of the lock on the morning of Sept. 26.

The man was wearing a life jacket and was able to call for help after he fell, but crewmembers were unable to stop the barge from drifting against the lock wall.
