Containership that caught fire towed to Bahamas

(FREEPORT, Bahamas) — The containership Yantian Express, which caught fire on its way to Halifax on Jan. 3, has been towed to the Bahamas, The Canadian Press reported.

Tim Seifert, a spokesman for shipowner Hapag-Lloyd, said the vessel is awaiting clearance to enter Freeport and once it does, “the recovery and assessment efforts of the cargo can proceed in a safe environment.”

No one was injured, but the ship’s 22 crewmembers had to evacuate as the fire spread. It was brought under control by oceangoing tugs.

The original plan was to tow the ship to Halifax, but Seifert said on Jan. 23 that it would instead head southwest “toward more favorable weather conditions.”
