(PASADENA, Texas) — Robert “Mark” Lloyd, maritime instructor at San Jacinto College, recently captured a 40 Under 40 Award in recognition of his work in training the next generation of merchant mariners. The award, designated by the Inland Marine Expo (IMX), recognizes the top 40 individuals under the age of 40 working in the inland marine industry.
Lloyd is a United States Coast Guard-approved instructor with the college who is instrumental in recruiting students into an industry currently facing a shortage of qualified workers. He mentors students and often visits schools in the Houston area to share opportunities in the marine industry. He has served as the Maritime Summer Camp director for two summers.
“As the concern for a shortage of qualified mariners grows, Mark is doing more than his part to reach students at a young age,” said Amy Arrowood, San Jacinto College director of the maritime credit program. “Mark also provides valuable support for students outside the required class hours in the form of one-on-one tutoring. He is passionate about making sure students do not just get the material in the classroom, but actually become competent in the topics and are able to apply these skills into real-world applications in a safe and efficient manner.”
Lloyd joined San Jacinto College in 2015. A graduate of Texas A&M University at Galveston, he has more than 10 years of experience in the maritime industry. He currently holds licenses for third mate unlimited tonnage, oceans license, as well as 100-ton master. Mark has served as master of passenger and private vessels traveling the Gulf of Mexico and the East Coast.
“I’m very proud of the maritime program, the people I work with and our students,” said Lloyd. “It is very rewarding to be recognized for the work that we do for the maritime industry. Current students and alumni success stories are the true reward.”
Students who graduate from the San Jacinto College maritime program typically enter the work force as deck hands or tankermen on inland pushboats, barges, towboats and passenger vessels. For more information, visit sanjac.edu/maritime.
