Propeller Club to honor Rep. Rob Wittman at Salute to Congress

(FAIRFAX, Va.) — The International Propeller Club of the United States has announced that Rep. Rob Wittman of Virginia, will be honored at the club’s annual Salute to Congress dinner, to be held on May 16 at the Army Navy Country Club in Arlington, Va.

The chairman of the House Subcommittee on Seapower and Projection Forces, Wittman will be recognized for his support of the United States maritime industry. Throughout his service in Congress, Wittman has been an advocate for the many components of a strong domestic maritime industry. He understands the importance of a vibrant U.S.-flag fleet to the nation’s economy and security. He was a founder of and co-chairs the Congressional Shipbuilding Caucus because he recognizes the important role of American shipyards and the associated industrial base in maintaining a strong maritime economy and in national defense. He is a strong advocate for the Jones Act, the Maritime Security Program, cargo preference, and other laws that are essential to the United States merchant marine.

“Representative Wittman has certainly earned the Salute to Congress honor with his outstanding support for the U.S. maritime industry,” said the Propeller Club’s international president, Rear Adm. Joel Whitehead, U.S. Coast Guard (retired). “We look forward to thanking him for that support. We are grateful for his leadership of the Seapower subcommittee and of the Shipbuilding Caucus.”

The Propeller Club’s Salute to Congress is the maritime industry’s most prestigious and anticipated annual event in the nation’s capital. For more than three decades, the club and its members have recognized members of Congress who have demonstrated consistent support for the maritime industry and the U.S.-flag merchant marine. More than 250 guests are expected to attend and honor Wittman, including individuals from the executive and legislative branches as well as independent agencies, leaders from the maritime industry and members of the Propeller Club from throughout the nation.

Past recipients of the award include then-Speaker of the House Thomas P. “Tip” O’Neill, the first honoree in 1985, and then-Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott in 1997. Recent honorees include Sen. Roger Wicker, Rep. John Garamendi, and Sen. Mazie Hirono, last year’s recipient. A complete list is at http://www.propellerclub.us/events/salute-to-congress/past-recipients.
