(PHILADELPHIA) — Philly Shipyard, which is looking for new customers after TOTE suspended an order for four new containerships earlier this year, has announced that it plans to lay off 275 workers by July 20, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported.
The company, whose majority shareholder is the Norwegian holding company Aker ASA, has laid off about 250 employees and contractors in recent months, reducing its work force to 950. With the new layoffs, the work force will drop to 675. The company has said that layoffs will continue this year as it completes work on two 850-foot dual-fuel containerships for Matson, which will be the largest of their type built in the United States.
The TOTE ships would have extended the series for the U.S. mainland-to-Hawaii trade, but the company postponed its plans in January due to the cost of terminal improvements in Honolulu.
