(LONG BEACH, Calif.) — Applications are now open for the Summer High School Internship Program at the Port of Long Beach, as well as the port's college scholarships. Applications, eligibility information and detailed instructions for both programs are available on the port's education portal website, academy.polb.com.
"We are dedicated to educating the next generation of leaders for the Port and international trade," said Long Beach Harbor Commission President Lou Anne Bynum. "Our summer interns get to work hands-on doing the daily business of the port, while our scholarships are part of a longstanding commitment to supporting higher education in the city we serve."
The summer internships, a partnership between the Port and Pacific Gateway Workforce Investment Network, are a paid opportunity for Long Beach area high school students to explore careers in the goods movement industry. The program runs from June 25 through Aug. 16 and is open to high school juniors and seniors in the Long Beach Unified School District service area.
The scholarships, open to LBUSD-area high school seniors pursuing careers in international trade, logistics and other port-related industries, range from $1,000 to $5,000, which will be disbursed over four years of college. Since 1993, the Port has awarded nearly $721,000 in scholarships to local students.
Applications for both programs are due by Thursday, March 1; no late applications will be accepted. Internship applicants must present their applications in person. Applicants are advised to read the instructions carefully.
