ITB refloats after grounding in Straits of Mackinac

(SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich.) — An integrated tug-barge that ran aground Friday in the Straits of Mackinac refloated with the current Saturday, SooToday.com reported.

The tug Defiance and barge Ashtabula were en route from Cedarville, Mich., to Buffington, Ind., when the grounding occurred Friday afternoon in Round Island Passage between Mackinac Island and Round Island. The 720-foot ITB had 97,918 gallons of diesel fuel and 2,917 tons of stone on board.

The U.S. Coast Guard conducted overflights on Friday evening and Saturday morning and did not identify any signs of pollution. Coast Guard marine inspectors cleared the ITB proceed on its voyage later Saturday.

The cause of the grounding is under investigation.
