Containership adrift after engine fire off BC coast

Mol Prestige 9321029 448864.570x1140

(VICTORIA, British Columbia) — A containership bound from Vancouver to Tokyo was adrift Thursday after an engine fire caused it to lose propulsion, the Surrey Now-Leader reported.

The Victoria Joint Rescue Coordination Center was advised at 2230 on Wednesday that the 961-foot MOL Prestige was in distress with 23 people on board approximately 207 nautical miles southwest of Haida Gwaii.

A CH-149 Cormorant helicopter was en route to the ship Thursday afternoon to medically evacuate two crewmembers, and the Canadian Coast Guard ship Sir Wilfrid Laurier also was en route.

The ship's owner, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, has contacted a tugboat that is heading for the area to secure the vessel.
