(NEW YORK) — The Coast Guard presented the Public Service Commendation Award to the crews of the ferry vessel J.J. Callis, the Orient Fire Department, public safety dispatchers from Southold Police Department, and a Plum Island paramedic in a ceremony at the Riverhead Fire Department on Tuesday.
The honorees were recognized for their successful efforts in rescuing three fishermen in the vicinity of Orient Point on the evening of April 14.
At approximately 7 p.m., watch standers at Coast Guard Sector Long Island Sound command center received a report from Southold Police Department dispatchers of three fishermen who had gone overboard when their vessel struck a rock. Sector Long Island Sound issued an urgent marine information broadcast, and crewmembers of J.J. Callis and the Orient Fire Department quickly responded and safely rescued all three fishermen.
“We are fortunate to have strong partnerships in the local community,” said Capt. Kevin B. Reed, commander, Coast Guard Sector Long Island Sound. “The cooperation between good Samaritans and local agencies is critical to saving lives and protecting the maritime community.”
All individuals are recognized for their courageous display of selfless dedication to the preservation of life. The award cited their remarkable initiative and fortitude in saving three fishermen and losing their lives.
J.J. Callis is a ferry operating between Orient Point and Plum Island.
