Canadian mariner dies in fall at Eisenhower Lock

(MASSENA, N.Y.) — Authorities are investigating the death of Canadian man who fell off a dock into the St. Lawrence Seaway at Eisenhower Lock early Tuesday morning, North Country News reported.

State police say Alfred Eshun, 57, of Quebec, slipped from the dock at about 12:20 a.m. He was pulled from the water within minutes but was unresponsive, according to police. He was pronounced dead at Massena Memorial Hospital at 2:02 a.m.

Police said Eshun was working on the Canadian bulk carrier Spruceglen, which was inbound to Eisenhower Lock. Before entering the lock, Eshun was hoisted down the side of Spruceglen to tie off the ship while awaiting another ship already in the lock. After being hoisted down, Eshun lost his balance on the dock and fell into the water.

Two St. Lawrence Seaway employees who attempted to rescue Eshun were rescued and treated for possible hypothermia.

The U.S. Coast Guard Marine Safety Detachment is assisting with this investigation.
