San Jacinto, SMART partner on Texas workshops

The following is the text of a news release from the Southeast Maritime and Transportation (SMART) Center:

(ORANGE and GALVESTON, Texas) — The SMART Center in partnership with San Jacinto College is holding two Get SMART! Impact Workshops for secondary educators and maritime and transportation industry leaders.

The new workshops provide participants with core concepts and materials needed to develop or expand academic courses and pathways that will enable students to enter the maritime and transportation industry, which is critical to our nation's economy and security. Participants will also receive SMART products including lessons, tool kits, the "Make the SMART Choice!" video series and the new SMART Maritime and Transportation Career Guide & Resource Handbook. Participants can meet key industry players in their region to help support their programs and learn about registered apprenticeship programs, internships and college programs for students in their area.

Who should attend?

Secondary STEM and CTE educators, college faculty, guidance counselors, career coaches, and secondary and college-level administrators as well as maritime and transportation industry employees who would benefit from interacting directly with local educators for work force development.

What does the workshop involve?

The workshop provides a place to network with some of the Gulf Coast region's top maritime and transportation industry employers as well as apprentices and other students currently working in STEM-related positions. Participants will tour industry workplace sites that are off-limits to the public such as shipyards, ports and ships. They will receive highly-relevant materials to implement in their classroom or to help create a new pathway, program or class project. They will also learn about registered apprenticeship programs, internships and college programs for students in their region as well as opportunities for professional development.

Benefits

There is no fee to attend a Get SMART! Impact Workshop. Upon completion of the workshop and follow-up surveys, participants will be eligible for a $200 stipend.
