PASADENA, Texas — American Commercial Barge Line (ACBL) recently selected the San Jacinto College Maritime Technology and Training Center to deliver Rose Point electronic charting system (ECS).
Rose Point ECS is used by recreational boaters and commercial marine operators. American Commercial Barge Line approached the Maritime Technology and Training Center to facilitate the training for their crews located in the Houston area. The center developed and customized a class specific to ACBL's needs.
San Jacinto is also delivering for Point Comfort Towing, which is sending its mariners to the college's maritime program for required job training and recertification, thanks to a Skills for Small Business grant by the Texas Workforce Commission that provides $6,700 for their training.
Point Comfort Towing is a small harbor tug operation that serves the Calhoun Port Authority. Capt. James Andrews, president of Point Comfort Towing, identified six courses offered at the college’s Maritime Technology and Training Center to develop technical skills for his engineers, leadership for his captains, and radar and shipboard firefighting training.
“This program will go a long way to help us comply with the new regulations,” Andrews said in a prepared statement, adding that the U.S. Coast Guard recently introduced Subchapter M regulations that mandate additional training requirements for merchant mariners and their employees.
The San Jacinto College Maritime Technology and Training Center on the Maritime Campus is located at 3700 Old Highway 146 in La Porte, Texas. The center offers maritime company contract training, in-house Coast Guard-approved courses for working mariners and an associate degree program in maritime transportation.
