(CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas) — Port commissioners on Tuesday unanimously approved the appointment of Andrea Morrison as a deputy branch pilot for the Port of Corpus Christi Waterways, the first woman in the region to serve in that role, the Corpus Christi Caller-Times reported.

Capt. Jay Rivera, the presiding officer of the Aransas-Corpus Christi Pilots Association, said Morrison met all the qualifications for the position and that a letter of acceptance would be written to the U.S. Coast Guard on Morrison's behalf. That letter will enable her to participate in the association's observation and training program.

Morrison said she knew as early as high school that she wanted to spend the rest of her life in the maritime world. "I like being on the water, I like driving ships," she said.
