(KINGSTON, Ontario) — The Transportation Safety Board of Canada is investigating after a paddlewheeler ran aground during an excursion cruise Tuesday in the St. Lawrence River, the Kingston Whig-Standard reported.
Island Queen III, operated by Kingston 1000 Island Cruises, grounded in Whiskey Cut at about 12:45 p.m. while traveling its regular route between Cedar Island and the mainland. No pollution was reported and there were no injuries among the 274 passengers.
“There was no mechanical error, but there was a situation that developed in the bay that created this unfortunate incident,” said Hugh Mackenzie, general manager of Kingston 1000 Island Cruises, who declined to comment further.
Island Queen III is currently dry-docked for repair. Mackenzie estimated it will remain out of commission until the middle of next week.
