NAMEPA, ASA seek marine science papers

Eligible students can win scholarships up to $500

The following is the text of a news release from the NSF SMART Center:

(VIRGINIA BEACH, Va.) — High school or college students who participated in a science or engineering fair in 2017 can be eligible for scholarship money to further their education in marine sciences. 

Applicants can send a project abstract of 300 words or less and a technical paper describing their project for consideration of special awards to be presented jointly by the Education Committees of the American Salvage Association (ASA) and the North American Marine Environmental Protection Association (NAMEPA). Papers and abstracts will be accepted until Sept. 15. Winners will be notified before Sept. 30 and will be announced at NAMEPA's Annual Conference and Dinner. 

Competition will be divided into two groups for prizes: High school 9-12 grades and college/university undergraduate students. First place winners will be invited to receive the award at a marine industry function event of the American Salvage Association and/or the North American Marine Environmental Protection Association (NAMEPA) in the fall of 2017.

To be considered, a project should focus on one of the following broad marine science subject areas: marine environmental care, naval architecture, marine engineering, ocean engineering, meteorology, underwater robotics, air emissions from ships, alternative fuel supplies for ships, oil and chemical spill remediation, offshore well control, diving systems, marine biology, marine ecosystems, marine microorganisms, ship design, ship breaking, recovery of sunken ships, cargo, fuel or pollutants, related marine salvage or marine environmental projects.

Eligibility requirements:

High school prize — Enrolled in ninth-12th grades during 2017
Undergraduate prize — Undergraduate student enrolled full time during fall 2017

Expectation requirements:

Abstract of paper 300 words or less
Technical paper, no size limitation
Due date prior to Sept. 15, 2017

Prizes (offered jointly by both NAMEPA and ASA Education Committee):

High school submission — $500, 250, 100 (first, second, third place)
Undergraduate submission — $500, 250, 100 (first, second, third place)

All prize winners will receive recognition in industry publications.
First prize winners will receive invitation to receive awards at industry functions.
Additional "special recognition" awards may be presented dependent upon submissions.
