The following is the text of a news release from the Maritime Institute of Technology & Graduate Studies-Pacific Maritime Institute (MITAGS-PMI):
(SEATTLE) — MITAGS-PMI is seeking passionate, mature mariners who are interested in using an apprenticeship to advance their careers. The training provider is seeking individuals for its Maritime Apprenticeship Program who have educated themselves on the occupation and have decided that this is a career worth pursuing.
The Maritime Apprenticeship Program has been training mariners since 2006. In the intervening decade, the curriculum has grown stronger with input from 40 partner companies in the cruise, ferry, towing, salvage, offshore supply vessel and research sectors of the Industry.
The two-year program with alternating sea phases and academic phases has a strong retention rate and is respected nationwide. An apprentice receives onboard training during his/her 360 days at sea. The academic phases consist of approximately 26 weeks in the classroom and additional time in the full mission simulator.
Based on where sea time is earned, apprentices are eligible to test for a third mate unlimited (ocean or inland) or a mate 500/1600 GRT (oceans or near coastal) endorsement, an able seafarer endorsement, and a mate of towing endorsement (if sailing with a towboat company).
The newest apprentice partner is Washington State Ferries, and MITAGS-PMI is actively looking for applicants who want to become officers aboard the state ferry system.
