Louisiana canal reopens after crane barge hits lines

The Coast Guard reported multiple downed wires and power outages

The following is the text of a news release from the U.S. Coast Guard:

(NEW ORLEANS) — The Coast Guard has reopened the Harvey Canal near New Orleans to vessel traffic Thursday. 

The downed power lines and crane barge have been removed.

Coast Guard Sector New Orleans received a report that an uninspected crane barge allided with a series of power lines in the vicinity of Harvey Canal at approximately 11:30 p.m. Wednesday.

There are no reports of damage to the barge.

The cause of the incident is under investigation.

(NEW ORLEANS) — The Harvey Canal near New Orleans is closed to all vessel traffic until further notice Thursday. 

Coast Guard Sector New Orleans received a report that an uninspected crane barge allided with a series of power lines in the vicinity of Harvey Canal at approximately 11:30 p.m. Wednesday.

There are multiple downed power lines and power outages in the affected area, creating a safety hazard.

The owner of the barge is en route to assist Entergy, who is on scene, in the removal of the crane barge from the power lines.

There are no reports of damage to the barge.

The cause of the incident is under investigation.
