Coast Guard reopens four Texas ports after Harvey

(HOUSTON) — The U.S. Coast Guard has reopened the ports of Houston, Texas City, Galveston and Freeport, with some restrictions on vessel traffic, after they were closed due to Hurricane Harvey, Reuters reported.

The section of the upper Houston Ship Channel from Morgan’s Point inbound to the turning basin remained closed Wednesday until weather conditions improve, the Coast Guard said in a prepared statement. All vessel traffic is limited to daylight hours.

The restriction prevents vessels from transiting to five oil refineries. Also, only low-draft tankers are allowed to travel to Texas City, where three refineries are located, since the Coast Guard has imposed restrictions on the size of vessels allowed to navigate there.
