AMVER cruise ship rescues 10 African migrants

The following is the text of a news release from the U.S. Coast Guard:

(WASHINGTON) — The Automated Mutual Assistance Vessel Rescue System (AMVER) participating cruise ship Britannia rescued 10 African migrants off the coast of Spain on Monday, Oct. 23.

According to multiple new reports, including the Daily Mail, crewmembers aboard Britannia spotted 10 people struggling in an inflatable raft. A rescue helicopter was called to hoist the survivors who received medical care and food on the cruise ship.

The ship, on a voyage back to the United Kingdom from Spain, transferred the survivors to Spanish Coast Guard authorities. Britannia enrolled in AMVER on March 23, 2015 and has earned two AMVER participation awards.
