Tugboat engineer charged with dumping oily waste into Lake Huron

Victory Ken Bailey

(BAY CITY, Mich.) — The chief engineer on a commercial tugboat has been indicted in connection with the discharge of oily waste into Lake Huron, Upper Peninsula Breaking News reported. According to a complaint authored by a special agent of the U.S. Coast Guard Investigative Service, Jeffrey W. Patrick warned subordinates on the tug Victory not to talk about replacing a broken oil collection system for the bilge with a faulty bypass. Patrick allegedly warned a crewmember “not to say anything to the Coast Guard” even as the USCG was raiding the tugboat. The discharges reportedly caused oil slicks over a six-week period from the middle of May to June 30, 2014.
