Derecktor to build second hybrid research boat

The following is the text of a news release from Derecktor Shipyards:

(MAMARONECK, N.Y.) — Derecktor Shipyards has announced its next project utilizing cutting-edge hybrid technology, combined with the quality construction upon which Derecktor’s reputation is built. Following on the highly successful application of hybrid electric propulsion on the 65-foot research catamaran Spirit of the Sound for The Maritime Aquarium in Norwalk, Conn., the City University of New York (CUNY), in collaboration with the Science and Resilience Institute at Jamaica Bay (SRI@JB), is contracting with Derecktor to build the second vessel in the Derecktor Hybrid Series.

The vessel will be built to U.S. Coast Guard Subchapter T regulations and will be operated out of Jamaica Bay, N.Y. It will be used for research and educational purposes and will benefit from the silent operation of the hybrid system for highly sensitive research applications. Researchers will be focused on environmentally responsible operation with minimal impact on the local waters. This goal will be accomplished in part by limiting use of seawater for cooling equipment and instead use keel coolers to minimize the wastewater discharge from the vessel. This, in addition to the reduced emissions of the BAE HybriDrive system, will create one of the most forward thinking and environmentally friendly vessels in operation today.
