Canada to dismantle abandoned cargo ship near Montreal

(BEAUHARNOIS, Quebec) — The federal government announced on Thursday that the dismantling of an abandoned cargo ship near Montreal should begin next spring, the Montreal Gazette reported. The bulk carrier Kathryn Spirit was brought to Beauharnois, Quebec, in 2011 by a private Quebec firm hoping to dismantle it and sell it for scrap. The project didn’t materialize and the ship was sold to Mexican interests who have since declared bankruptcy. They abandoned the vessel last year on the shores of Lake St. Louis, which streams into the St. Lawrence River. Officials said that since the ship’s deteriorating condition rules out transporting it elsewhere, a $7.9 million protective embankment will be constructed around the bulker to allow it to be taken apart in the water.
