Towboat captain sentenced to six months in prison for fatal Chicago barge explosion

(CHICAGO) -- An Illinois towboat captain has been sentenced to six months in prison for his role in a fatal barge explosion in 2005, the Chicago Tribune reported. Dennis Egan, 36, was in charge of a tow in the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal when his cargo of petroleum byproduct exploded, killing deck hand Alexander Oliva, 29, who had been instructed to use a torch to thaw a frozen pump. Egan had been convicted of negligent manslaughter and the vessels' owner, Egan Marine, is ordered to pay $5.3 million in restitution.
