The following is the text of a news release from the State University of New York (SUNY) Maritime College:
(THROGGS NECK, N.Y.) — SUNY Maritime College’s fourth annual STEM Academy, which runs July 27 to 31 in Throggs Neck, will provide inner-city high school students with a five-day, practical, hands-on program intended to increase student participation and achievement in the STEM disciplines of science, technology, engineering and math.
The STEM Academy is open to students attending maritime-themed high schools and will build upon the schools’ curriculums. Along with an emphasis on STEM disciplines, the weeklong summer enrichment program will focus on the SUNY Maritime College core values of accountability, responsibility, diligence and leadership. Lessons have been designed to be hands-on and highly interactive. The maritime college’s faculty members work directly with the students in the STEM Academy to bring the class subjects to life.
SUNY Maritime College’s STEM Academy is presented, in part, through the financial support from The TK Foundation, supporting youth development programs that meet the needs of motivated disadvantaged youth, ages 15-21.
Participating students will have an opportunity to board and sail on the tall ship Lettie G. Howard, an original 1893 fishing schooner operated by the South Street Seaport Museum in collaboration with New York Harbor School and with support from the Port Authority, which provides unique tall ship sail training opportunities for students from New York and New Jersey.
High schools participating in the SUNY Maritime STEM Academy are: The Urban Assembly New York Harbor School, on Governors Island, New York City; the Maritime Industries Academy of Baltimore, Md.; the Maritime Academy Charter High School of Philadelphia, Pa.; and the Western New York Maritime Academy High School of Buffalo, N.Y.
A breakfast and closing ceremony, where the students will give presentations highlighting their weeklong team project, is scheduled for Friday, July 31 at 9:30 a.m. in the campus’s waterfront Maritime Academic Center.
