MVG launches NeptuLink for high-speed Internet access at sea

(KENNESAW, Ga.) — The expectation for instant communication regardless of location in today’s world is now a priority. The maritime industry has long demanded a robust and cost-effective solution to deliver high-speed Internet access to users while at sea. The Microwave Vision (MVG) Group is pleased to launch its latest award-winning technology to the U.S. market, NeptuLink by MVG.

NeptuLink satisfies the communication needs of travelers bringing super-fast Internet (100 Mb/s) to maritime users when offshore. From ship to shore with a 20-nm radius (approximately 23 miles), NeptuLink is suitable for use on board ships as well as various vessels in coastal areas.

Until now, satellite Internet providers held a monopoly on the provision of telecommunications coverage at far distances from the shore. The costs were significant, at around $17,000 per installation plus expensive data charges. Now NeptuLink offers a high-quality alternative system at a fraction of the price.

NeptuLink has been designed specifically with maritime in mind. With reinforced mechanics, it is tailored to withstand the harsh marine environment: high winds, corrosive elements and often unstable ocean conditions. Not just a simple repeater, NeptuLink houses a SIM card. Through its two antenna transmitter-receivers it serves as a terminal that connects directly to distant 4G networks or UMTS GSM where 4G is not available. Connection is achieved via LTE bands (2, 4, 5, 13, 17 and 25).

NeptuLink allows maritime vessel owners to provide wireless access to everyone on board and maintain optimal communication regardless of humidity, sea salt and spray, rolling and pitching motion, and vessel type (fishing boats, yachts, research vessels, wind farms, coast guard and sea rescue vessels).

NeptuLink is the outcome of two years rigorous research in which MVG has partenered with Thales Communications & Security, Alcatel-Lucent, Deti, Telecom Bretagne along with the support of  two innovation hubs, Images & Reseaux and Mer Bretagne Atlantique (TMS project).

NeptuLink has already been awarded two prizes for innovation in France issued by the Prix Competitivite mecenat Banexi Ventures, and by the Grand Prix Images & Reseaux mecenat Bpifrance. This year, MVG has sponsored four European sailing regattas: Corsica Classic 2015, Le Tour de Bretagne a la Voile, Le Record SNSM, and TOWT where NeptuLink provided Internet access for live news feeds from the boat.
