(NEW YORK) — Crowley Maritime Corp.’s 2014 Thomas B. Crowley Sr. Memorial Scholarships have helped to further educational opportunities for three students of State University of New York (SUNY) Maritime College. The recipients, who each sailed with Crowley during their studies, were chosen based on their excellent grades, demonstrated financial need and plans to pursue a career in the towing or petroleum shipping industries after graduation.

“SUNY is a great resource for professional, qualified mariners,” said Crowley’s Jenny Terpenning, recruiter, marine personnel. “Crowley regularly hires from its marine transportation and marine engineering programs. We have hired more than 30 graduates from SUNY Maritime College since 2012.”

Scholarship recipient Thomas George Edenfield is a first class cadet and graduation candidate for SUNY’s upcoming commencement ceremony. He’s from Calverton, N.Y., and has worked hard to help pay for his tuition and school costs. Edenfield said funds from the Thomas B. Crowley Memorial Scholarship supplemented the pay he received from working weekend jobs and support from his family, ultimately helping him to finish his degree in marine transportation on time. He completed his towing officer assessment record (TOAR) aboard a tugboat in Crowley’s Puerto Rico services fleet in November of 2014 and said he is looking forward to beginning his career in the towing industry.

Jonathan Agliata, also a first class cadet studying marine transportation, is pursuing a U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) deck officer’s license. He’s from Manahawkin, N.J., and sailed with Crowley as a cadet aboard the company-managed oil and chemical tanker Empire State from April to July of 2013. He expects to graduate this spring and begin a career aboard coastwise tankers.

Jessica Victoria, a scholarship recipient from Fairfield, Conn., is pursuing a degree in international transportation management with a deckhand license. She sailed as a cadet aboard the Crowley-managed oil and chemical tanker Sunshine State from May to August of 2014, and has worked aboard the U.S. troop ship (USTS) Empire State VI for four semesters. In that role, she works directly under the ship’s chief mate to carry out safety inspections, handle purchasing and manage underclassmen for the ship’s maintenance requirements. She expects to graduate this September with plans to sail on coastwise tankers.

Since 1984, Crowley has provided more than $3 million in scholarship funding for more than 1,000 students studying at maritime academies and other select institutions in the U.S., Puerto Rico and Central America. In 1994, Crowley Chairman and CEO Tom Crowley Jr. established the Thomas B. Crowley Sr. Memorial Scholarship Program, in honor of his father, and has also donated more than $2 million to support other educational programs.
