Crewmember's family files $100 million lawsuit in sinking of El Faro

(JACKSONVILLE, Fla.) — A lawyer for the family of a missing El Faro crewmember has filed a $100 million lawsuit, accusing shipowner TOTE Maritime of gross negligence in the sinking of the ship, Reuters reported. Attorney Willie E. Gary filed the suit on behalf of the estate of Lonnie Jordan, one of 33 crewmembers presumed dead after the cargo ship sank last week off the Bahamas in Hurricane Joaquin. "The ship should have never left dock. The ship was not seaworthy," Gary said. TOTE executives previously have said the captain sailed with a sound plan and that the ship suffered a loss of propulsion which led to the sinking.
