Tugboat operators oppose 'no discharge' zone in Puget Sound

(OLYMPIA, Wash.) — A state proposal to prohibit commercial boat owners from discharging sewage — even treated sewage — into Puget Sound is drawing opposition from tugboat operators, the Kitsap Sun reported. Under current rules, sewage that is treated in an approved marine sanitation device may be discharged in most areas of the sound. The “no discharge" zone would halt that practice and require holding tanks on boats with toilets.
