(GREEN BAY, Wis.) — The winter of 2013-14 produced some of the heaviest ice on record across the Great Lakes, slowing the start of the commercial shipping season, the Green Bay Press-Gazette reported. The Port of Green Bay, which usually receives its first ship between March 28 and April 3, has yet to see that happen. About three-quarters of Lake Superior, the largest and deepest of the Great Lakes, remains ice-covered. It could be two weeks before the surface is clear enough for freighters to make the crossing without an icebreaker escort.
