Frigid weather bringing abrupt end to river shipping in Minnesota

(WINONA, Minn.) — Frigid temperatures are forcing an early end to the season for Mississippi River barge traffic here, the Winona Daily News reported. Companies typically stop shipping around Thanksgiving, but the icy weather has moved up that timetable by at least a week. Barge operations also had an unusually late start this year with the river being iced over until mid-April.
