Coast Guard investigating sinking of tugboat in Merrimack River

(NEWBURYPORT, Mass.) — The U.S. Coast Guard is investigating how the tugboat Virginia sank in the Merrimack River during the weekend, The Daily News of Newburyport reported. The tug, operated by SPS New England, was moored off Deer Island in Amesbury before it was reported missing Saturday morning. It had been deployed to ferry crane barges, equipment and contractors to a local bridge project.
